Phi Mu House

Sorority Houses were were built on the back campus in the 1930s. They were demolished in 1959 to construct the library and new dormitories.  Phi Mu (formerly Sigma Delta) was installed on campus in September,  1929. In 1939-1940 the national chapter of Alpha Delta Theta merged with Phi Mu. The two sororities on campus merged leaving the vacant the Alpha Delta Theta house which had been damaged by a fire a few years prior to this event.  The six houses were originally in a row located between the present Clock Tower and Everett Library. The house was surrounded by a small yard and picket fence.  On October 24, 1979, Phi Mu celebrated its fiftieth anniversary on campus by presenting an arbor swing. It was not possible to place the swing on the exact spot where the original Phi Mu house stood because that would have been in the center of the circular driveway. When the fountain honoring Dr. Billy O. Wireman was constructed in 2002, the swing moved to the grassy area between the library and South Residence Hall.  The fountain area would be where the Phi Mu House stood.
