Cornerstone Presbyterian College for Women
The cornerstone of Presbyterian College for Women was given to Queens College when the building was demolished in 1948. It is embedded in the lawn in front of Burwell Hall at the Myers Park campus.
Presbyterian College for Women was established in 1896 by the Presbyteries of Concord and Mecklenburg. According to Miss Harrell's history of the college, the Board of Trustees of the Presbyterian Female College (later Presbyterian College for Women) saw the Seminary for Girls, directed by Miss Lily Long, as the link between the Charlotte Female Institute and the Presbyterian College for Women. The Presbyterian Female College was chartered May 30, 1896, and the Board of Trustees elected Miss Lily Long as principal and Mr. Tinsley Junkin as co-principal. Faculty and students of the Seminary for Girls transferred to the college. Miss Long was the Principal from 1896-1899, and Lady Principal (Dean) until 1910.
