Charlotte Female Institute, c. 1872
The original photograph is very faded and has a sepia tone. It is mounted on a heavy paste board with the following notations.
Photographed by Rufus Morgan, N.C.
Charlotte (N.C.) Institute for Young Ladies.
Principals Robert H. Chapman, D.D, and Mrs. Verina S. M. Chapman
Dr. Chapman is listed as president from 1872-1875. He is the son of Robert Hett Chapman who was president of the University of North Carolina from 1812-1816. Dr. Chapman practiced law in Ashville, North Carolina before being ordained a Presbyterian minister in 1839. The change in name from Charlotte Female Institute to Charlotte Institute for Young Ladies is a brief anomaly found on this picture and in the 1875-1876 catalog. The name changed back in the 1880s.
