Installing the VPN Client Software

Installing the VPN Client software on Windows XP or Windows Vista requires Administrator privileges.

Instructions and screenshots provided in this document represent the Windows XP experience.  They may vary slightly on Windows Vista.

1.                  It’s recommended that you close all other Windows applications, and disable all virus scanners and firewall software, before you begin the installation.

Download the VPN client software (vpnclient-win-is-5.0.0.00340-k9.exe) from the following location:

      http://campus.queens.edu/its/vpn

a.      Extract the contents of the archive into a folder such as c:\vpnclient5.

b.      The Installation should begin automatically.  If it does not, run setup.exe.

2.                  The Installation Wizard welcome screen will appear.  Click the Next button to continue

3.                  Click the Next button to accept the license agreement and continue with the installation

4.                  The default installation folder should be fine for most users.  If you wish to change the location do so now using the Browse button. Click Next continue.

5.                  Click Next to install the software

During the installation process, Windows XP users may see one or more warnings about the installation of hardware that has not been certified by Microsoft.  If so, you may safely ignore these warnings by clicking Continue Anyway button.

6.                  Once the VPN Client software has been installed, you will be prompted to restart your computer.  Click the Finish button to exit the Installation Wizard and restart your computer.

Configuring the VPN Client Software and Making a Connection

Before the VPN Client software can be used, you must first define a connection entry for the Queens University of Charlotte. To do so,

1.                  Start the VPN Client application by selecting Start > Programs > Cisco Systems VPN Client > VPN Client (Program location may vary on Vista).

2.                  Click the New button to start the New Connection Entry Wizard

3.                  Give this connection a name, Queens for example, by filling in the Name of the new connection entry field.  The Description field is optional, and can be left blank if you choose.  Enter vpn.queens.edu in the Host box.  You will also need to enter the Group Authentication Name and Password.  This can be supplied by IT Services or you can look this information up on the I: drive while logged in to the Queens network locally.  Click the Save button.

4.                  Your VPN client software will now display the new VPN connection entry

5.                  Connect to the Queens VPN by double-clicking on the connection entry or by highlighting the connection entry and clicking the Connect button.  You must be outside of the Queens network to do this.

6.         Once the connection to the campus VPN server is established, you will be asked to provide authentication.  Enter your Queens University of Charlotte Domain username and password in the Username and Password field respectively, and then click the OK button. If you do not have, or do not know, your Domain username, contact the Information Technology Services Help Desk at 337-2323 for assistance.

7.                  Once you have successfully authenticated, the VPN Client will minimize itself to the system tray area in the bottom left of your screen, and appear as a small yellow lock.  You will also see a welcome screen.  At this point you are connected to the Queens network and are ready to use the connection for running applications such as Jenzabar or mapping a network drive.

Above is the system tray icon you will see.

Additional Information

·         For most users the VPN client is set-up in split tunneling mode, meaning only traffic destined for the University network (IP addresses beginning with 152.36.) will go through the VPN tunnel. All other traffic will go through your existing internet connection.  Some users will be assigned to a group that does not use split tunneling.  For these users all internet and network traffic will go through the VPN tunnel.  This will be transparent to the user.

·         If your PC is protected by a firewall (BlackIce Defender, ZoneAlarm etc) you may need to adjust it’s settings to allow the VPN Client to communicate with the campus VPN server.  How this is accomplished will depend on the firewall you have installed.  Refer to the Help sources supplied with your product.  IT Services staff may not be familiar with every product used by home users.

·         The Cisco VPN software will result in the Welcome Screen and Fast User Switching being disabled (if they are enabled).   Fast user switching is the feature in Windows XP that allows you to switch from one user’s profile to another without logging off or rebooting.

·         If you have questions, or require assistance, please contact the Information Technology Services Help Desk at 337-2323.

·         Windows XP users who have the Internet Connection Firewall setting enabled must disable it before attempting to establish the VPN connection.  To check if the Internet Connection Firewall is enabled:

1.                  Select Control Panel; from the Start menu.

2.                  If the Control Panel is set to Category View (the default for Windows XP) you will see a screen similar to the one below:

3.                  The firewall can be enabled or disabled from the Security Center icon.  If you disable the firewall, remember to turn it back on when finished with your VPN connection.
