Microsoft Office 2007 Compatibility Download

The default Microsoft Office 2007 file formats are incompatible with all previous versions of Microsoft Office. Since this incompatibility may interfere with course work submissions or document sharing ITS is encouraging users to continue using Office 2003 but to install the Office 2007 Compatibility Pack which enables prior versions of Office to open Word 2007, Excel 2007 and PowerPoint 2007 files. For further information visit the Microsoft Office 2007 Compatibility page.

Students, be aware of the Daylight Savings update

Daylight Savings Time (DST) will start 3 weeks earlier and end 1 week later beginning this year. The standard period for DST would have been April 1 through October 28, but this year it will be March 11 through November 3. This could cause problems with personal calendars, so we are advising all students to make sure their computer is up to date.

Windows Users
Please run Windows update by clicking here to visit the Windows Update website. Follow the directions.

WARNING: Do Not Install Internet Explorer 7

Microsoft will distribute Internet Explorer 7 as a high-priority update via Automatic Updates soon after the final version of the browser is released for Windows XP later this year. Workstations on the Queens network receive these updates from one of our campus servers which receive them from Microsoft. Although IE 7 has some desirable new features it is also known to break several applications. Some applications used on the Queens network will not yet co-exist with IE 7. The potential ramifications of installing IE 7 in our environment may be SEVERE. Therefore IT Services will NOT be allowing the automatic update from IE 6 to IE 7 to be pushed out to our campus computers at this time.

IT Services is warning all computer users on the Queens network and users who connect to the Queens network from home to avoid installing IE 7 if you are prompted to do so by a Microsoft pop-up. For almost all campus computers we have the ability to control the update process so you will not encounter this issue. However if for any reason you are prompted to do so by a Microsoft pop-up balloon, we STRONGLY urge you to decline the installation in order to avoid potential serious compatibility issues.

The Microsoft prompt, should you see one, will appear similar to what is shown below in the following progression of screens:

1. The initial prompt…

2. The next screen…

3. The prompt where you should select “Don’t Install”...

At this time IT Services will not support IE 7 until compatibility issues are resolved as they relate to other campus software packages. We will remove any installations of IE 7 manually from workstations if it is necessary to do so. Once compatibility issues have been resolved we will approve the IE 7 update for installation and you will be notified that it is ok to begin using IE 7.
