Personal Network Router PolicyPersonal networking devices such as wireless and wired routers are not permitted to be installed in the Residence Halls without the permission of IT Services. This is a violation of the university’s Acceptable Use Policy (AUP). The AUP can be accessed at http://campus.queens.edu/its/policies/aup.asp. The reason for this is that routing network devices disrupt the university’s ability to properly monitor and manage network performance. Routers run internal DHCP servers to supply IP addresses to their connected clients. The IP addresses they use are dissimilar to those used on the Queens network. If the router is misconfigured entire buildings can lose access to the network. This has happened on many occasions in the past. However some network devices are permitted. See below for some acceptable options for in-room networking within the residence halls. To add physical data ports within a room network simple switches and hubs are permitted. Examples of allowed switches include:
To add wireless capability routers are NOT permitted but wireless access points are permitted if it they are properly configured so that DHCP server functionality is turned off. Examples of allowed wireless access points (if properly configured) include:
