Email Information
Key things all Queens email users should know
- Queens has migrated to Outlook on January 19, 2006.
- Queens users will use Outlook and Outlook Web Access (OWA) as email clients.
- You can access your email at any time over the web by pointing your internet browser to https://owa.queens.edu and logging in with your username and password. Webmail is being replaced by Outlook Web Access (OWA). You are not able to login to Webmail.
- You can update your Global Address List information by visiting https://directoryupdate.queens.edu.
- Mac users should use Entourage and OWA.
- There will be many enhancements over the previous email system including more space, shared calendaring, public folders and full synchronization of Outlook mail, contacts and calendar with OWA.
- Username@rex.queens.edu will no longer be a valid address form for Queens users. Mail sent to rex.queens.edu addresses will be undeliverable. Mail must be sent to username@queens.edu. If there are people who send you email using rex.queens.edu please notify them so they can update their address books.
- When emailing students, you must put their email addresses or distribution lists in the BCC line. They should not see each others email address.
- Pegasus Mail is going away. Pegasus users can still read old email in Pegasus until Novell has been uninstalled from your computer. Note: You will not be able to send or receive mail from Pegasus – you will only be able to view pre-existing mail to review or print it.
Key things all Outlook users prior to Jan 19th should know
- If you were using Outlook prior to January 19,2007, you are using it as a POP client. This means you are downloading your email from the mail server to your local computer. Although you may continue doing this after the migration we strongly recommend against it. To get the most benefit from the new mail system we recommend you configure your Outlook as an Exchange client. When Outlook is configured as an Exchange client you will be able to use shared calendaring, public folders and have full synchronization of Outlook mail, contacts and calendar with OWA. This means that all of your Outlook items will be available to you from anywhere via OWA. You will no longer need to connect the Queens VPN when you’re off campus simply to perform email tasks. Outlook will cache a local copy of your email so that even if the email server is unavailable for some reason you will still have access to your Outlook items. Plus you get the benefit of network backups of your email. None of this functionality will be available to you if you continue to use Outlook as POP client.
- We recommend you reconfigure your Outlook to connect to the Exchange server right before the conversion date but not too far in advance since Outlook performs best when only one mail account is present. Once you’ve setup Outlook to connect to your Exchange account you can you can copy or import any of the mail from your local Personal Folders to the Exchange account (or leave them there as an archive if you prefer). Then you can remove your POP account from Outlook leaving your Personal Folders there as an archive area.
