Guidelines for Directed Readings, Directed Study, Honors Thesis
NOTE: FAILURE TO FOLLOW THESE RULES WILL RESULT IN DEDUCTIONS FROM YOUR OVERALL GRADE ON YOUR HONORS PROJECT
1. Proposalsa. Should be in no later than the end of the previous semester
b. Should include a 1-page summary of the project, a bibliography, the name of the main faculty advisor, and at least TWO possible faculty for the oral defense committee
c. Should include how many credits the student is getting for the project
2. Procedures---Directed Readings (HONR 250)
a. Students should meet with their main faculty advisor at least once every three weeks
b. These meetings should last at least 1 hour
c. Students should discuss with their faculty member the readings they have done and the connections between the readings
d. Students should form their defense committee no later than the 10th week of the semester (and get each member of the committee a list of the things read) and inform the Honors Director as soon as the committee is formed
e. The student should set up a date and time for the defense of their project no later than the 12th week of the semester
f. In their defense, students should be prepared to answer all questions relevant to their reading
g. Students should also be prepared to answer questions about how this project fits into their larger thesis project
h. Defenses will last about 1 hour
i. At the end of the defense, the main thesis advisor will consult with other members of the defense committee to formulate a grade
3. Procedures---Directed Study (HONR 350)
a. Students should meet with their main faculty advisor at least once every three weeks
b. These meetings should last at least 1 hour
c. Students should discuss with their faculty member the research they have done, what further research needs to be done, and how all this research fits together
d. Students should also provide an updated bibliography and a detailed outline of the project to the faculty member no later than the 7th week of the semester
e. Students should provide the faculty member with a rough draft no later than the 9th week of the semester and meet with the faculty member within one week to discuss the faculty member’s comments
f. Students should form their defense committee no later than the 10th week of the semester (and provide them with a summary of the project) and inform the Honors Director as soon as the committee is formed
g. The student should set up a date and time for the defense of their project no later than the 12th week of the semester
h. The student should provide a final draft of the paper or project to each member of the committee no less than one week before the defense
i. In their defense, students should be prepared to answer all questions relevant to their project
j. Students should also be prepared to answer questions about how this project fits into their larger thesis project
k. Defenses will last about 1 hour
l. At the end of the defense, the main thesis advisor will consult with other members of the defense committee to formulate a grade
4. Procedures---Honors Thesis I (HONR 490)
a. Students should meet with their main faculty advisor at least once every three weeks
b. These meetings should last at least 1 hour
c. Students should discuss with their faculty member the research they have done, what further research needs to be done, and how all this research fits together
d. Students should also provide an updated bibliography and a detailed outline of the project to the faculty member no later than the end of the semester
e. The faculty member will only give a Continuance grade to the project if the student has followed these procedures
5. Procedures---Honors Thesis II (HONR 491)
a. Students should meet with their main faculty
advisor at least once every three weeks
b. These meetings should last at least 1 hour
c. Students should discuss with
their faculty member
the research
they have done, what further
research needs to be
done, and how all this

e. Students should provide the faculty member with
a
rough draft no later than the 9th week of the
semester and

Thesis.
