  Scenibig

THE TRIPWe will meet at RibbonWalk at 2 PM (8:30 for the Thursday morning lab section) for a walking tour.  Bring your HABITAT ANALYSIS FORM.

RibbonWalk Botanical Forest is a 150-acre forest just northeast of the intersection of I-77 and I-85, a twenty-minute drive from the campus. The land is owned by the local park department, but access and development are managed by the RibbonWalk Conservancy.

Directions to RibbonWalk: Take Belk Freeway to 277 to I-77 North to I-85 North and exit at Statesville Road. At the top of the exit ramp, turn left onto Statesville Avenue/Road.
(Or take Selwyn/Queens/Providence/4th all the way through uptown and turn right near the Panther stadium onto Graham, veer left on Statesville Avenue at the stoplight just after Graham goes under the 277 Freeway, stay on Statesville for several miles.)
From the intersection of Statesville Avenue/Road and I-85, continue north 0.6 miles on Statesville Road to a stoplight at Nevin Road. Turn right; follow Nevin Road 1.2 miles. RibbonWalk is on the left, usually marked with a banner; a street sign says "Hoyt Hinson Road."
If the gate is locked, park there and walk in. If the gate is open, drive on until you see picnic tables; park on the grass to the left.

What you need to know from this lab for test 3 and the exam

  • You should be prepared to apply real-life examples to the concepts of  "fitness" and "adaptation," especially behavioral adaptations and how they affect fitness.
  • The other content of this lab will not be on Test 3 but will be on the final exam.
  • You should expect some exam questions which require you to connect specific conditions in these fields and streams and forests to specific ecological principles (especially those related to biodiversity) found in the relevant chapters of the textbook.  Therefore, missing the trip would be a serious faux pas in addition to the 0 grade for the lab report.
