BIOL 103:  PRINCIPLES OF BIOLOGY

Principles of Biology is about scientific evidence in the fast-breaking research areas of contemporary biology: ecology, genetics, and molecular biology.

Approximate Schedule

Note that you are expected to master most of the "Study Focus" items at the end of each chapter before coming to class. The instructor will specify the detailed expectations for each class period in advance. Then, most classes will begin with a short quiz based on the chapter review, but before the quiz you may ask questions about parts you had trouble understanding.    Updates (<--click for any recent changes)

Test 3 bonus question: What happened behind the scenes with the microarrays in the bee news story (http://www.eurekalert.org/pub_releases/2003-10/uoia-get100603.php )?
Explain how they could have made the microarrays, how the microarrays measured bee gene expression, and how the researchers could have "generated mRNA profiles." Use and underline at least ten molecular or biotech terms in your explanation.

Do not try to hide your confusion by using technical phrases copied from the textbook or reference sources; using your own words is your best evidence of achieving a reasonable level of comprehension.

You may use your textbook and additional reference sources.  The bonus report must be your own work; no collaborating or assisting is allowed except from lab assistants or the learning center tutors.  Write the honor pledge on your report.
(due at the beginning of class Friday, 14 November; no untyped or late papers will be accepted)

    Test 3 answers

    Info about spring schedule choices:

    • Science majors should sign up for
    • Biol 201 (Invertebrate zoology with Dr. Martin)
    • Chem 112 (only if you’re taking chem 111 now)
    • Math 121 or 206 and/or foreign language
    • CORE maybe honors
    • English 120 (freshmen), maybe PE
    • maybe exploring other departments or biology seminar
    • More information

test 1 answers now available.  Test 2 answers are in the lab

The textbook CD  is installed on the lab computers.  Some of them even have CDs available.  But if those are busy, you can bring your own CD.

All the lab computers are available for your use any time.  All the lab computers also run powerpoint if you want to review the lectures, linked to the help pages.
