SCIENTIFIC ASPECTS, THE LATEST STUFF on Global Warming
"The bottom line of this convergence could be a sea change
in the global warming debate. Until now, the MSU data have been the principal refuge for
those who deny the reality of global warming. We believe that warming trends of both the
surface and troposphere are now sufficiently clear that the issue should no longer be
whether global warming is occurring, but what is the rate of warming, what is its
practical significance, and what should be done about it."----See Science article by Hansen

UNFCCC (United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change).
The Convention's "ultimate objective" is to stabilize greenhouse gas
concentrations in the atmosphere at a level -- and with enough time -- to prevent
"dangerous anthropogenic interference with the atmosphere." The Kyoto
Protocol = the treaty, the rules designed to control the increases in greenhouse gas
concentrations.

establishes deadlines for finalizing the outstanding details of the Kyoto Protocol so that
the agreement will be fully operational when it enters into force sometime after the year
2000. The plan also addresses work on compliance issues and on policies and measures,
boosts work on transferring climate-friendly technologies to developing countries, and
pays special consideration to the needs and concerns of countries affected by global
warming and by the economic implications of response measures."

OFFICIAL COUNTRY INFORMATION
http://www.unfccc.de/ Then click on
"country" and then on your country. Some links may be dead ends, but if you
persist, you should be able to find enough information to write a book. The main problems
are
[1] for some countries the bulk of the information is not in English, and
[2] you need a lot of patience to figure out which "clicks" are productive, and
which are just outlines with the details never added.
[Possible problems #3: you don't have a clue what any of this is about because you haven't
read enough about the Kyoto protocol and its implementation. So read the above
IMPLEMENTATION links first.]
Also try the "advanced search" feature, which will give more
information than you could ever need for this project.
An idea: e-mail addresses for actual human beings involved are often
listed. It wouldn't hurt to email a person, tell them you are a student, and ask for their
personal opinions on their/your country's role in implementing the Kyoto protocols. |
