THE RISE OF FUNDAMENTALISM  

Questions:  

The rise of PROTESTANTISM FUNDAMENTALISM in the early 20^th century is an enormously important story.  What was fundamentalism exactly?  Where did it come from?  What were its main tenets?  

We have in today’s reading FIVE collections of evidence.  As you prepare for class, please find at LEAST THREE important points about fundamentalism from each reading.  

Make a list of the points, something like this:  

1. The Fundamentals
2. “Fundamentalism is Very Much Alive” (1921)
3. “Shall the Fundamentalists Win?” (1922)
4. J. G. Machen, “Christianity & Liberalism” (1923)
5. “Fundamentalism and Modernism, Two Religions” (1924)

 Next: put these 15 bits of data together.  What now can we say about the early decades of Fundamentalism?
