History & Social Studies Certification Information
History serves as an important component for those students planning to teach history or social studies in elementary or high schools upon graduation. At Queens University of Charlotte, the education department oversees all licensure requirements. If you are interested in obtaining certification to teach upon graduation, you must contact the education department. The information provided below offers only a brief guideline for those students interested in obtaining certification to teach history or social studies. None of the information below addresses courses offered by the education department that students must take to obtain licensure.Elementary Education Social Studies Specialty Area
Students majoring in elementary education and wishing to complete a social studies specialty must take the following courses:
History 202: The West in the World
History 203: American History to 1877
History 204: American History since 1877
Economics 203: Principles of Macroeconomics
Political Science 201: Introduction to American Politics
Sociology 203: Principles of SociologySecondary Education Licensure Requirements for History & Social Studies
Note: As of academic year 2002-2003 these are the old standards. The new standards are listed after this section.To obtain licensure to teach high school history or social studies students MUST complete ALL the requirements for a history major.

1. Secondary Education Requirements for History2. Secondary Education Requirements for Social Studies
- Must complete all the requirements for a history major
- Must take North Carolina history (not required for history majors)
- Political Science 201: Introduction to American Politics OR Political Science 250: Introduction to Comparative Politics
- Economics 203: Principles of Macroeconomics
Sociology 203: Principles of Sociology OR Sociology 250: Social Issues and Problems
- Must complete all the requirements for a history major
- Must take North Carolina history (not required for history majors)
- Political Science 201: Introduction to American Politics OR Political Science 250: Introduction to Comparative Politics
- Economics 203: Principles of Macroeconomics
- Sociology 203: Principles of Sociology OR Sociology 250: Social Issues and Problems
- Must take an additional 12 credit hours in related social sciences. Social science courses include the following disciplines:
Economics, History, Political Science, Psychology, Sociology. Courses from other disciplines may be substituted upon review.
