The Biology Department at Queens has a
tradition of successfully preparing students for a variety of
careers. Students interested in medicine, dentistry, veterinary
medicine and other health professions usually major in Biology or
Biochemistry. Those interested in ecology or wildlife may
choose Biology or Environmental Biology.
|
|
Many of our graduates have entered masters or doctoral programs in
areas such as environmental science, horticulture, and cell or
molecular biology.
Other Queens biology students find jobs immediately after
graduation as teachers, lab technicians, park and museum
naturalists, pharmaceutical representatives, and other
careers.
Science majors work very hard at Queens taking two or
three lab courses nearly every semester. Queens’ size
coupled with a conscientious faculty assures that students
do not get lost or left behind in this demanding curriculum.
Recent highlights from the department include a student who
spent a semester in Ireland and finished the term with the
highest average in her class, awards to the Queens chapter
of Tri-Beta, a national biological honor society, Tri-Beta
honors to one of our students for her research on bacterial
adhesion to artificial joint appliances, presentation of a
paper at a national infectious disease meeting for research
on nosocomial infections, a Fulbright Fellow who spent a
year in Mexico doing molecular research on viruses that
cause diarrhea in children, and more.

SOME BOOKS WE LIKED |
| Future of Life by E. O. Wilson 2002.
Easy but up-to-date explanation about the importance of
conservation and biodiversity. |
Fly for the Prosecution (614.1 G556F
in our library). Forensic entomology case
histories. Perfect for true nerds or crime fans.
|
Genome by Matt Ridley-
Basically a summary of molecular genetics, but livelier and
more speculative than a textbook. |
Servants of the Map by Andrea Barret.
Novellas (fiction but with some historical facts) about
lives changed by characters' obsession with science. |
| Beak of the Finch is still our favorite
book about real scientists. |
Galileo's Daughter by Sobel.
Interesting but scholarly biography. |
Nabokov's Blues--
biography of the famous writer (Lolita, etc.), but
about his other career as a lepidopterist with 30+ scholarly
publications on butterfly taxonomy. |
this is only a start. Have you read
anything you want to recommend?
